Receive the Word

In the beginning was the Word
The Word with God, God was the Word
Always with God from origin
Everything was made through Him

Without Him nothing came to be
Not one thing that has come to be
In Him life was
And the life was
The light of all humanity

And the light shines in the darkness
Which the darkness could not possess
God sent a man whose name was John
To bear witness concerning one

To testify about the Light
That all through him believe alright
He was sent and was not that Light
Sent to bear witness of that Light

The true Light, every man lighting
Into the world He was coming
He was in the world, made through Him
The world He made did not know Him

Even His own rejected Him
But as many as received Him
Their right as God’s children became
To those who believe in His name

Not born of blood, nor fleshly thrill
But of God, not of human will

The Word became flesh and with us dwelled
And so His glory we beheld
Of the Father’s one and only
Full of grace and truth in glory

John bore witness and cried and said
“This was He of whom I had said
‘He who follows me is preferred
For long before me, He was heard.’”

Of His fullness we’ve all received
And even more gifts, grace for grace
The law was given through Moses
Grace and truth came through Christ Jesus

No one has seen God ever yet
The only one God did beget
In the Father’s intimate zone
He has come and made Him known

John 1:1-18

Jesus as Refugee

To Joseph an angel appeared,
In Egypt, safety is assured
Stay there until I bring you word
Herod wanted no children spared

So by night they left for Egypt
And stayed ‘til the death of Herod
Fulfilling prophecy begun,
“Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

When Herod saw the wise men flee
He went on a child murder spree
Fulfilling what the prophet said,
Lamentation through Ramah spread

When Herod died, an angel said
You can go back home, Herod’s dead
Fulfilling prophecy foreseen
“He shall be called a Nazarene.”

Matthew 2:13-23

God with Us, God Saves

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was this way
Mary was to marry Joseph some day
But before the marriage even took place
She’s with child by the Holy Spirit’s grace

Righteous Joseph caused no anxiety
Chose to break the engagement quietly
But, an angel came to him in a dream
Don’t fear, the Holy Spirit’s in this scheme

She’ll have a son, and you’ll name him Jesus
He’ll save his people from their sins grievous
The Lord’s message through his prophet compiled
“Behold! The virgin will conceive a child!

She’ll give birth to a son, Emmanuel,
Which means ‘God is with us.’ as all will soon tell”
Joseph awoke and took Mary his wife
Then after the birth came marital life

And Joseph named him Jesus
[And Jesus means, God saves (us)]
And Joseph named him Jesus
[Emmanuel, God with us]

Matthew 1:18-25

Offended by Jesus

John heard in prison what Christ was doing
He sent two disciples to Him asking
“Are You the One who is to come?
Should we expect another one?”

Jesus said, “Tell John what you hear and see
Lepers cleansed, lame walk, deaf hear, the blind see,
Dead are raised, poor hear the gospel decree
Blest is anyone not stumbling at Me.”

Jesus spoke to the multitudes of John
“What did you go in the wilds to look on?
A reed in the wind? A man in soft clothes?
Those in soft clothing live in fine abodes.”

“Was it a prophet you went out to see?
Yes, I say, more than a prophet was he.
For this is he of whom it is written
‘Prepare the way, My messenger’s mission.’”

“Of those born of women there’s none greater
But the least in the kingdom are greater
The kingdom suffers intensely
But the bold take it zealously.”

Preparing for Christ

In those days John the Baptist came
To the wilderness to proclaim
Repent of sins and turn to God
The Kingdom is near, not abroad

Isaiah speaking about John said
Shouting in the desert he spread
Prepare the way, the Lord’s coming
Clear the road for his forthcoming

John’s clothes were made from camel’s hair
And a leather belt he did wear
He ate locusts and wild honey
People came from the whole country

They went out to see and hear John
To confessed their sins they were drawn
He baptized them in the Jordan
And their leaders came to hearken

John denounced them, “You brood of snakes!”
Who warned you to flee when wrath breaks?
Where are your fruits of repentance
Sons of Abraham is no stance

God can make sons of Abraham
From these very stones in the land
Now the ax is poised and ready
To sever the roots of the trees

Every tree that has no good fruit
It’s chopped down and given the boot
I baptize people with water
But someone’s coming much greater

I’m not worthy his shoes to wear
He’ll baptize with Spirit and fire
He’ll separate the chaff and wheat
He’ll winnow and clean the floor neat

He’ll place the wheat into the store
Burn the chaff with eternal fire”

Matthew 3:1-12

Watching and Praying

No one knows the day or the hour
When these things will happen down here
No not the angelic order
Or the Son, only the Father

When the Son of Man comes our way
It will be like in Noah’s day
In those days before the drenching
Were banquets, parties and weddings

Right up until Noah boarded
They ignored warnings afforded
Unaware of what was coming
‘Til swept away in the flooding

Just like when the Son of Man comes
Two farmers; two different outcomes
Two women working at the mill
One taken, the other left still

So you, too, must keep watch!
It’s not something to botch
You don’t know when the Lord’s coming
It’s just like the burglar’s cunning

Keep watch lest your goods be stolen
Always ready, that’s the slogan
For the Son of Man will then come
Unexpected by everyone

Matthew 24:36-44

Human or Christ's Leadership

When they had come to Calvary
They crucified Him brutally
Criminals right and left of Him
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them

For they don’t know what they’re doing.”
They bet on His clothes, lots strewing
And the people stood looking on
Even the rulers said with scorn

“He’ll save Himself if not a fraud
If He’s the Christ, the chosen of God.”
The soldiers also came and mocked
Giving sour wine they did concoct

“Save Yourself, if You’re the Jews’ King.”
Made a sign in three tongues writing,
Said, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS
A criminal blasphemed his views

“If You’re Christ, save Yourself and us.”
But the other rebuked him thus
“Don’t you fear God, you’re condemned too?
We receive our punishment due

But this Man has done nothing wrong.”
“Recall when kingdom comes along.”
“I tell you, today in this place
You’ll be with Me in Paradise.”

Luke 23:33-43

Don't be Deceived

Then, as some spoke of the temple
Adorned with stones so beautiful
And gifts to God dedicated
With which it was decorated

He said, “These things which you are beholding
The days will soon be unfolding
In which not one stone shall be left
On another, but thrown to rest.”

So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher
When will these things be a feature?
And what sign will there be when these
Things are about to take place please?”

He said: “Take heed you’re not deceived.
In My name heaps will be received
Saying, ‘I’m He,’ and, ‘The time’s near.’
Don’t go after them, when you hear.

When you hear of wars and tumults
Don’t waver; expect such results
But the end won’t come right away.”
And then He had some more to say

“Nation will rise against nation
Also kingdom against kingdom
There will be terrible earthquakes
In various places outbreaks

And famines, plagues and fearful sights
Also great signs from heaven’s heights
Before all these things come to pass
They’ll lay hands on you and harass

In the assemblies and prisons
You’ll be before rulers and kings
For My name’s sake you’ll testify
Don’t plan ahead what you’ll reply

I’ll give you a mouth and wisdom
Foes can’t fight with criticism
You’ll be betrayed by your brothers
By parents, friends and relatives

And they’ll even kill some of you
And for My name’s sake they’ll hate you
You won’t lose a hair on your head
Stand firm and win your life instead.”

Luke 21:5-19

Daylight Savings

Daylight savings, what a crock
Now it's time to change the clock
Not just one of them but all
In the car and on the wall
No, not just one wall but four
And that's just wall clocks, there's more
Bedside table and the stove
Wristwatch in my treasure trove

Is it forwards or backwards?
This whole thing is for the birds
Every six months wasting time
Isn't slavery a crime?
Yet we're all slaves to the clock
Set me free, my chains unlock
Anxiety is mounting
How many clocks? I'm counting

God of the Living

Now there came to Him some Sadducees
Who say that there’s no resurrection
They posed questions for His expertise
A man reaches life’s expiration

He dies childless and Moses taught us
His brother should marry the widow
To raise children for his brother up
Now then seven brothers did ditto

The second and the third married her
And in the same way all seven died
Childless, her death did also occur
Whose is she a resurrection bride

She had been married to all seven
Jesus said marriage is for this age
It’s different in the resurrection
No giving or taking in marriage

For they can’t even die anymore
Because like angels, they’re sons of God
Sons of the resurrection what’s more
The dead are raised, Moses spread abroad

Describing the burning bush he said
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’s God
He’s God of the living not the dead
For all live to Him, so said our Lord

Luke 20:27-38

Repentance of a Con Man

When Jesus entered Jericho
There was a man named Zacchaeus
A rich man came to see the show
Tried to get a look at Jesus

Too short to see over the crush
He climbed a tree beside the street
Jesus was coming, better rush
He looked up, Zacchaeus to greet

Jesus called Zacchaeus by name
Quick, come down! I must be your guest
Quickly a welcome was proclaimed
He took Jesus home with joy expressed

But displeased, the people grumbled
He’ll be the guest of a sinner
But, Zacchaeus stood and crumbled
The poor, I will now consider

If I’ve cheated on taxation
I’ll give them back four times as much
To this home has come salvation
A son of Abraham does such

For the Son of Man paid the cost
To seek and save those who are lost

Luke 19:1-10

The Evil King

There used to be an evil king
Who had nothing but lies to bring
He praised dictators of the world
Friendships with good kings unraveled
He didn't care for the nation
But loved to receive ovation
And then came the end of his reign
He had no friends left, that was plain

The One in Ten

As Jesus entered a small town
Ten lepers just hanging around
Said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
“Go show yourselves to the priests” thus

They were cleansed while they were going
But one returned overflowing
“Praise God!” he shouted to Jesus
And thanked Him for the catharsis

That man was a Samaritan
Christ asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men?”
And then, “Where are the other nine?”
None but a foreigner in line?

And Jesus said, “Stand up and go.”
And He said, “Your faith has saved you.”

Luke 17:11-19

Honesty

My Dad believed in honesty
A trait that's not found commonly
His clients knew his constancy
And so they came back faithfully

When I hear of a company
Known for its dishonesty
Or leaders lying constantly
I think of my Dad's policy

Liars have no authority
And truth may seem an oddity
But lies destroys a dynasty
And truth brings us to sanity

Putting Faith to Work

5 The apostles said to the Lord
“Add to us faith.”
6 Then said the Lord
“If mustard seed size is your faith
You could tell this sycamore tree
‘Be pulled up and set in the sea’
It would listen to you and heed”

7 “When a farmhand comes from the lea
From plowing or tending sheep
Does the boss say, ‘Come eat with me’?
8 When his job is a meal complete
No, he says, ‘Cook me up some meat
Then, serve me while I drink and eat.
Later on, you can take a seat.’

9 “And does the boss praise the hired hand
Who does just the least by command?
10 Of course not! In the same way
When you obey me you should say,
‘We’re unprofitable servants
[Undeserving and worthless]
Who’ve just done minimal service.’”

Luke 17:5-10

Homesick for Far Away

When I'm home in America
I surely miss Australia
Though the hills of Appalachia
Are covered in hydrangea
I miss the sound of the magpie
As he swoops down from up on high

When I'm home in Australia
I surely miss America
Though peace and safety here is great
And everybody is your mate
I miss the forests and farmlands
And the never ending grasslands

I Wait on You

How long O Lord, I'm getting bored
Don't leave ignored My life's reward

I want to preach, The Gospel teach
And people reach With holy speech

I know I'm dust But You are just
And You I trust, Help me adjust

I wait on You To see me through
And something new to live up to

The Land of Ten Thousand Beaches

The land of ten thousand beaches
Apples, bananas and peaches
The magpie's warbling way up high
The crow's amusing mournful cry

A land where every one's your mate
Where arrogance just doesn't rate
A land of equals paid quite well
And much less crime, as you can tell

In the Outback look up at night
The Milky Way appears so bright
Then hear a kookaburra's laugh
All your worries are cut in half

Vision of Eternity

A vision of eternity
Of a peaceful community
Humanity and deity
No more death, no mortality

A new heaven and a new earth
A street of gold of untold worth
No death, mourning, crying or pain
No lies are told in this domain

Nothing unclean and no more curse
No abomination or worse
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.”
Inherit all who overcome!

Revelation 21-22

Teenage Years

Oh the pain caused by teenage years
It can't be paused; you can't change gears
Hormonal change can drive you mad
You'll feel quite strange, hurt mom and dad

You'll criticize; you'll want your way
You'll dramatize; you'll disobey
Your parents will cry many tears
Your heart will fill with many fears

You'll make it through, just take your time
You'll break into your adult prime
In the meanwhile just play it cool
And try to smile; don't be a fool

Your dad and mom gave you your life
So just be calm and don't make strife
You'll get your chance and very soon
You'll take your stance and shoot the moon

Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant

Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant
Divided yet united we should grant
Children of the Bible, from the same plant
Reasons for division we should recant

Belief in one God and Father of all
Belief that Jesus saves us from the fall
That the Holy Spirit comforts withal
And that Angels help us you may recall

We believe humanity fell from grace
And that there is sin that we must all face
Belief the words of Jesus have first place
And Jesus as Savior we all embrace

We believe in the Church that we stand by
She is the Bride of Christ we won't deny
Jesus will return in the bye and bye
And we all believe in heaven on high

Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant
Divided yet united we should grant
Children of the Bible, from the same plant
Reasons for division we should recant

A Parent's Training

A parent's training has begun
Watching his parents train their son
How they deal with their own daughter
From when we leave our birth water

When they're born we don't have a clue
With all the stress and crying too
Then puberty and drama queens
What parent can survive their teens

Then twenty and they're out the door
You wonder what the stress was for
All's forgiven or forgotten
Your concerns were misbegotten

A Real Man

As I drove down the road
I watched as traffic flowed
Some drive calm; some explode
Few drive in expert mode

Any rash fool can speed
Or drive too close indeed
But a real man will lead
He is a better breed

His character is strong
And doesn't go along
With weaklings who do wrong
Politeness does belong

When the speed says thirty
Real men don't drive dirty
Don't be just a trainee
Obey and be set free

Let Down Your Nets

The crowd was pressing around Him, And listening to God's word on a whim
Standing by Lake Gennesaret, Saw two boats at the edge of it
And fishermen washing their nets, Into one of their boats He gets
Asked Simon to move out from shore, From there taught the people some more

Afterwards to Simon He said, Go where it's deep and your nets spread
Simon said, We've worked hard all night, But I'll do as you say alright
And their nets were near to breaking, For all the fish they were taking
So they signaled another boat, For help so they could stay afloat

And both of the boats were quite filled, Began sinking and they weren't thrilled
Simon Peter saw that and spoke, Leave Lord, I'm a sinful bloke
And so amazement did catch on, With Simon's partners James and John
Jesus said, Don't fear, you'll catch men, They forsook all and followed Him

Luke 5:1-11

Love

If I could speak all the world's tongues
Speak thunder like angelic ones
But didn’t love others at all
I'm a gong or cymbal's brash call

If I've the gift of prophecy
And understood God’s mystery
And possessed all knowledge and such
Faith that I could make mountains budge

But without love, I am nothing
If I gave the poor everything
And I let my body be burned
Without love, I have nothing earned

Love is patient and love is kind
Not jealous or boastful in mind
Not proud, rude, demanding its way
Not easily angered I say

And it keeps no record of wrongs
Doesn't rejoice in evil's throngs
But rejoices when the truth wins
For love bears and believes all things

Love won't end, but prophecies will
Tongues and knowledge will become nil
We know and prophesy in part
But on completion, they'll depart

As a child I spoke just like one
Thoughts and reason had just begun
When grew up I put away
Childish things of the childish way

Now we see things imperfectly
Like a mirror reflectively
But then we'll see with clarity
What I know now is partially

It's not complete, but then I'll know
All things as God knows us below
Three things will last - faith, hope, and love
Greatest of these is love thereof

1 Corinthians 13

Laodicea

The church in Laodicea
You seem to have no idea
The Amen, faithful, true Witness
Creation's Beginning says this
Your deeds are neither cold nor hot
I'll spit you out right on the spot

You say, I'm rich, wealthy, something
You say you have need of nothing
You don't know you're poor and wretched
You're miserable, blind and naked
Buy from Me gold refined by fire
And become rich as you desire

And buy white garments to put on
So that your nakedness is gone
And eye salve to anoint your eyes
So that your seeing can arise
With love, I rebuke and chasten
Be zealous, repent and hasten

Behold, I'm at the door and knock
If one hears Me, open, unlock
I'll come in and we'll dine as one
And say to him who'll overcome
He may sit on My throne with Me
To the churches, Hear this decree

Revelation 3:14-22

The Wretched Farm

The farm, the farm, the wretched farm
It's done the clan a lot of harm
It drove the family away
For generations could not stay

The siblings felt like second class
The farm came first and they came last
Incorporation was ignored
And equal shares were not explored

It's much easier to forgive
When somewhere else we choose to live
Constant reminders are not there
And we can heal from the despair

And so we leave just to forget
With sadness and the clan upset
Start a new life in a new place
Forgive, forget, move on, seek grace

O China

O China why do you persecute
O why oppress Christians like a brute
Don't you know how much they can bless you
"Love your neighbor" means love country too

China knew God from antiquity
The ancient Chinese called Him Shangdi
It's really China's oldest belief
Jesus will bring China relief

Jesus' Commands

Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand
Is one of the first things that Jesus did command
Let your light shine, so people may see your good deeds
To see God in us is what the world really needs

Bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you
Give, pray and fast in secret. That's what you should do
Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness
Ignoring Jesus is why we're in such a mess

Judge not lest you be judged; see the log in your eye
Don't cast your pearls to those who would tread where they lie
Do judge the fruits of false prophets in sheep's clothing
Come to me for rest; I will be your sabbathing

Magi

In Bethlehem Jesus was born
While Herod ruled, a man to scorn
Magi came and asked, Where is he
Born King of Jews in this country
We saw his star, this is no whim
And we have come to worship him

Herod was troubled at this news
He thought he was king of the Jews
He gathered the chief priests and scribes
All descendants from Israel's tribes
Messiah is to be born where?
Prophecy states Bethlehem, there

Yes, Bethlehem, the House of Bread
That's the place, just like Micah said
You're not the least town in the land
From you Israel's shepherd will stand
While Herod plotted evil there
The Magi brought gifts for his care

Matthew 2
